How to Create a Better Sleeping Environment
By Jennifer Powel, owner of Born2Impress.com
Getting a good night’s sleep starts with your bedroom. There are small steps we can take to make our bedrooms the optimal place to recharge.
Let’s get one thing straight: sleeping is the way our bodies can recover and recharge, which is why a good night’s sleep is so important. Sleep deprivation or a poor sleeping habit can leave us drained and sluggish, which ultimately affects the way we perform at work, our fitness levels, and our lives in general. Poor sleep can also affect our mood, so a restful night of sleep is highly important.
Many Elements Can Disrupt Your Sleeping Patterns
Many factors can contribute to a restless night, and the environment is one of them. Try to stay away from anything that can cause you to stress before bed. Computers, smartphones, and work-related items should be put aside at least one hour before going to bed.
Avoid Clutter
Believe it or not, a clean and uncluttered room contributes to a more restful night. Avoid creating clutter and try to keep your room as neat as possible.
The Right Lighting
The proper lighting or lack of it is elementary for a good night’s sleep. Rooms with too much light can affect how you sleep and how easily you wake up during the night.
Colors Are Also Important
The right colors are also an important factor. Go for calming colors such as blue, neutrals, and earth tones to promote relaxation and a better night’s sleep.
Scents
The sense of smell is very strong, so the right scents, such as lavender, can help you improve the level of relaxation you need for better night’s sleep.
Invest in a Good Mattress
If you consider that we spend a third of our lives in bed, then it’s really not rocket science to realize that we should invest in a good-quality mattress. The firmness of the mattress is as important as its quality.
Whenever possible, visit a store that has different mattresses that you can try before buying. Many brands also offer trial periods, which is great if you are not 100% sure of the firmness you need for your mattress.
Bedding Is as Important as Your Bed
So you have invested in a brand-new mattress. Great! But the proper bedding is as important as the mattress. The softness, weight, and even materials of your sheets and bedding can affect your sleep.
The Right Bedding
What should you look for in your bedding? That depends on different factors, such as location. If you live in a warmer environment, then the thickness and weight of your comforter are very important.
Do You Suffer from Allergies?
An air purifier is always a nice addition to your bedroom but certainly not the only thing you can do to help allergies. People often disregard or do not pay close attention to the materials they bring into their bedroom, and this could make a huge difference for allergy sufferers.
If this is the case for you, then a lightweight, eco-friendly comforter made of natural materials such as wool will help regulate the body temperature, keeping you warmer during the cooler season and cooler during the warmer times of the year. Keeping the ideal body temperature during the night will prevent you from waking up because you are either too warm or too hot.
The ideal comforter will keep you warm when it is cold and prevent you from overheating when the temperature is higher so that you do not have to add or remove layers to your bed.
You also want your bedding to wick away moisture without making you feel cold or clammy, a feature that will reduce tossing and turning and deliver a more restful sleep.
Is the Texture Important?
A soft and nice-to-the-touch texture certainly makes for an overall comfort that can affect your ability to rest during the night.
Machine Washable
Yes, please! A machine-washable comforter makes for easy caring and hassle-free maintenance.
No need to lose your sleep over cleaning your comforter ( pun intended)
I have tried several comforters and my favorite so far is MyComforter light from Sleep and Beyond, a hypoallergenic comforter that rounds up all the main requirements to help with good night sleep.
There are actually three different ways to care for your comforter:
1st choice: Machine wash in cold water on gentle cycle and reduced agitation. Machine dry, air cycle.
2nd choice: Use washable cover.
3rd choice: Regular sunning and airing. The sun will naturally revitalize and disinfect wool bedding.
Ready for a good night sleep?
